Seven Junior Achievement Guam Companies competed in the Company of the Year 2019 competition in hopes of representing the island in the 2019 JA Asia Pacific Company of the Year Competition in Manila, Philippines scheduled for the month of March.
The student-ran companies were judged in four stages including Annual Report, Commercial, Interviews, Booth and On-Stage Presentation. The finale was hosted at the Agana Shopping Center on Saturday, January 12, 2019. The eight-member panel of Judges included Dave Beaver of Merrill Lynch, Irene Hicks of America’s Best Electric Mart, Jason Katigbak of IP&E Holdings, Jane Ray of Pacific SBDC, Josie Villanueva of the Archdiocesan, Ajay Pothen of Marianas Properties, Carlos Mesa of Personal Finance Center, and Jesse Quenga of UOG SBPA.
Students displayed their products, fielded questions from judges and presented their experiences through a skit on stage. Competing teams and their sponsors include ANZ’s Adahi Guahan, Bank of Guam’s Origins Sustieni, Bank of Hawaii’s Prumesa, Docomo Pacific’s Heromsa, and GTA TeleGuam’s Reach Napu. Representing the in-school programs were Simon Sanchez High School DECA Program’s Astraea and Souther High School DECA Program’s Reach Out.
After the pomp and circumstance, judges were ushered into deliberation to determine the winners of each category. The students and companies competed for awards in Vice Presidents of the Year for Marketing, Finance and Production; Best Commercial, Highest Return of Investment, Best in Show, Product of the Year, Best in Annual Report, President of the Year and the coveted Company of the Year title which comes with the right to represent Guam in Manila. Awarding will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Latte of Freedom.
